New York in the rain: a day worth staying out for
Build a rainy New York day around one museum, a library visit or a long lunch, with less crossing town and more time enjoying where you are.

In this story
Rain does not have to cancel a New York day, but it should change its design. A plan built around outdoor walks and repeated neighbourhood changes can become uncomfortable quickly. A better rainy-day plan has one indoor anchor, a nearby meal and an easy route home.
Choose the anchor first. Then make the surrounding day smaller. The following options are alternatives; there is no reason to attempt all of them in one wet afternoon.
Option one: a focused afternoon at MoMA
MoMA's Manhattan museum is at 11 West 53rd Street. Before leaving, check the current exhibition programme, ticket requirements and visitor policies. A rainy day is not a reason to assume admission will be available immediately.
Choose one exhibition or part of the collection as your starting point. Give it your attention before deciding whether to explore further. A museum can hold an entire day, but you do not have to stay until you have exhausted yourself to justify the ticket.
Check the current bag and umbrella rules too. Packing a small day bag makes moving around easier, but it does not exempt it from inspection or venue restrictions. Keep enough flexibility after the museum for a meal without a hurried transfer across town.
Option two: a collection day at The Met
The Met's official planning page is the place to confirm opening days, entry arrangements and any relevant gallery closures. Do this before travelling: a major museum's schedule is not interchangeable with another institution's.
Start with a theme rather than a list of famous objects. You might follow the way people dress in different works, look for depictions of rooms, or compare how artists use a particular colour. Choosing a thread helps a large collection feel less like a test.
Plan an actual break. Looking is tiring when you try to sustain the same intensity throughout. If you feel yourself walking past everything, stop, sit where seating is available, and decide whether there is one more area you want to see. Leaving is also a good decision.
Option three: a library visit with the right expectations
The New York Public Library's Stephen A. Schwarzman Building is a working research library. Its public visitor areas and tours can make a rewarding cultural stop, but access to research spaces is not the same as access to an ordinary tourist attraction.
Check the official tour information for current reservations and visiting arrangements. Treat reading-room access as something to confirm, not something a travel article can promise. Follow staff guidance and leave quiet working areas to their intended use.
This can be the anchor for a shorter day: a planned visit, lunch and a return to your accommodation. You do not need a second museum to make the afternoon count.
Build the route around dry intervals
Look at the route between your accommodation, your indoor stop and your meal. Minimise unnecessary changes rather than trying to remain completely indoors. A short walk can be more straightforward than an elaborate transport journey, depending on your location and access needs.
Consult the MTA's live planning information before travelling. Service changes and station accessibility matter more than the route you saved several days earlier. If you use a car service, check its current price and pick-up location rather than assuming it will be the quicker or cheaper choice.
Dress for the whole day, including indoors
Choose shoes you already know are comfortable, and check whether their materials suit wet conditions. A weather-resistant outer layer is only useful if you will actually want to carry it once inside. Do not rely on an untested garment's appearance as evidence that it will keep you dry.
Keep a wet umbrella away from books and electronics, and follow each venue's storage rules. A spare pair of socks may earn its place in the bag on a thoroughly wet day; a second full outfit usually needs a stronger reason.
Let the evening become simple
After a day indoors, the temptation is to compensate with an ambitious night. Instead, make the evening depend on your energy and the conditions outside. A nearby dinner, dry clothes and a quiet hour can be the most satisfying finish.
For the next clear day, keep our West Village walk ready. The places you postponed are still ideas for another day, not evidence that this one failed.
